Episode 1: The Godfather

Justin:

Easily on the short-list of all-time great American films, THE GODFATHER is a sweeping epic filled with unforgettable quotes, characters, and moments. From his ballsy decision to start the film with a half-hour-long wedding scene to using his final shot to land some solid symbolism, Francis Ford Coppola truly establishes himself here as a force to be reckoned with. And interestingly enough, I’m grateful that it took me this long to watch it for the first time. It’s not that I don’t think that 22 or 26 or even 30 years old me would have enjoyed or appreciated it. But I think that as more time has passed and I’ve gotten to see such a wide variety of other movies, it became so clear while watching THE GODFATHER how many modern movies make homages to or just straight up take from the tremendous work being done here. It’s essential viewing for really anyone who cares at all about movies and I look forward to experiencing it more times in the future, viewing it with a different eye than the virgin pair I used this time. Ultimately, if you’re a film lover, sitting down for this introduction to the Corleone family is an offer you just can’t refuse.
